| Aisen
is the eleventh of the thirteen administrative regions
used in Chile, it is also known as the Region of General
Carlos Ibáñez del Campo. Aisen is located
in the south of southern Chile and in the south west of
the area commonly referred to as the southern cone of
Latin America. In the north the limits of the region are
the rivers Frio and Palena, to the east the natural watershed
marks the border of Chile with the Argentine pampa. To
the south the southern Patagonian ice cap marks the limit
with Magallanes, the twelfth region, and the Pacific Ocean
marks the Western limit. The region covers an area of
109.052km2 and has a population of approximately 80000,
50% of whom are concentrated in Coyhaique, the regional
capital. |

There are three alternatives for traveling to Aisen:
- Overland - By the Southern Highway (Carretera Austral
) from Puerto Montt or Chaiten or via Argentina entering
Chile via one of several border crossings.
- By Sea - There are car ferries and passenger catamarans
from Puerto Montt to Chaiten (10th region) and to
Puerto Chacabuco.
- By Air - The Principal airport of the region is
Balmaceda. It is from here that all commercial domestic
flights to Puerto Montt and Santiago fly from. Balmaceda
is 45 minutes from Coyhaique. There are 4 flights
daily plus services to other cities such as Chaiten
(10th region) in smaller aircraft.
Legend has it that what God had left over from the
creation of the world he dropped in Aisen. Geographers
refer to the region as a geographical madness. If you
can add to the geographical madness an almost total
absence of people, a lack of contamination and a wild
but very welcoming country then you are beginning to
dream of Aisen.
